Toxemia-Planetary Devastation (2013)

These metalheads from Philippines really created a ripper of an album in Planetary Devastation. While somewhat hidden away compared to their other counterparts Pathogen, Toxemia splashed out 10 tracks of violent death/thrash which, while not always completely memorable or innovative, are really quite impressive, and definitely some of the most brutal.The album mostly consists of high-speed thrash tracks in the vein of Sodom's debut album, or perhaps Slayer and early Sepultura (morbid visions era). A good example of the consistent speed is the violent "Grave Desecrator" which features some of the most furious tempos I've heard in metal.The album closes with a bonus track "Soul Calibre" which once again shows an ever-so-slightly more mature approach to their sound, quite tight in contrast to the almost sloppy presentation on a few of the songs on the album. Vocals are surprisingly quite distinguishable for a Death/thrash band, sounding similar to Max Cavalera of Sepultura but in a slightly more abrasive manner. The song's 'verses' have a slightly unstructured feel vocally, as he seems to shout his lines in an almost "random" way. This seems to work the majority of the time, but there are moments in which it seems slightly off.The production is pretty rough, but clear enough. The chainsaw-like buzz of the guitars is at times over-powered by the drums, which tend to echo a fair bit. Apart from these factors it sounds fairly clean. This is a fast, abrasive and extreme band for sure.

This  is very hard to get into. If you like ambient black metal or stuff like that , you'll surely enjoy Usul from Philippines. But this Cd arrived in the wrong hands. Personally i'll pass on this one.

Blaspherian

Integrity and consistence. Blaspherian is probably a hard working band in the underground scene right now. So, has all that hard work paid off with theese three tracks Cd-R .Just one listen will convince fans old and new that this is a killer material, unholy death metal riffs, trudging doom metal sections, pummelling scissor blast beats, astounding finger played bass work, and vocals spewing forth blasphemy. Yup, everything one would expect to hear in an death metal band is here. Essentially what we have here is only 3 tracks , tracks 1-3 are from their 7". Track 2 is from the split with In League With Satan. Total ripping riffs that turn out to be really catchy. The production here is very fitting. Everything can be heard clear without being overdone at all. In fact, it sounds like the recording was relatively simple. No triggers, no bullshit, you know these guys played these songs with a lot of energy. A definite plus for sure. There is nothing that this band can do wrong. Good stuff !

Legium-Murder Insomnia (demo/cassette)

Legium has come to rely more upon traditional death metal elements in order to deliver an impression of darkness. The mix here is low-toned, with crushing riffs creating a doomy feeling while creating a classic death vibe that seethes with a brutal tonality. Legium have deliberately attempted to create different states of ambience, ranging from grooving grinding to dissonant brutal rhythms. If you’re a fan of Immolation, Autopsy and haven't heard this band, you should get a copy of this demo. A good band within the death metal community. Pure unholy death delivered with caliginous conviction!

Feral-Welcome To The Graveyard (Demo 2009)

Nowadays, old school Swedish death metal is a definite, “iconic” style to most extreme metal fans, thanks to the success of historical bands such as Carnage, Entombed, Dismember, Grave, Edge of Sanity, early Opeth, early At the Gates and some more recent retro acts such as Bloodbath and Feral. Obviously Feral isn’t certainly an unknown act, since they’re  considered as an important name, but some more recognition would be appreciated. "Welcome To The Graveyard" features the typical “chainsaw-like” guitar sound that's  common between tons of bands. The awesome artwork is already very inviting as well, and what you’re gonna find beyond isn’t certainly less worthy.The best thing I can say about this band is that  how all these ideas are mixed up together. Every song is a long, gloomy, mysterious gallery of different riffs, melodies and atmospheres, all perfectly concatenated together in a coherent way, through ambitious yet majestically successful constructions. When the first track opens the cassette, you know that something big is going on here, very original and remarkable riffs. On the other hand, the tremolo stuff is often rotten and ugly, in the classic death metal sense. However, it’s no coincidence if the riffage shines particularly when the band tends to experiment with typical old school Swedish melodies. In the end, “Welcome To The Graveyard” is an important piece of Swedish death metal, definitely essential if you want to understand the true nature of this genre. Death Metal rules!!

Torturer-Call Of Madness (2014)

The Canadian Torturer takes the satanic lyrical content and evil growls of Venom, and slam them together with the riffs and speed of Motorhead, this is what you'll end up with..."Living Dead", this is fucking evil! this is only the seond track but it rocks just as well as the rest of the album. When I hear this, I am reminded of those cool riffs of Motorhead. Oh well, all I know is that this album is heavy and obscure as fuck. Only the legendary Venom and Motorhead can compare when it comes to speed metal. By the way, the highlight here is the blazing guitar solos ...in other words this fucking KILLS!

Fetid Zombie-Grotesque Creation (Cassette-2015)

My taste in music is predominately hardcore, thrash, punk, death and grindcore. When the colossal groove of Fetid Zombie first emanated from my stereo, it was a revelation. This cassette is opening horizons of heaviness from which I drank deeply.Thanks to Mark Riddick "Grotesque Creation" is now in my hands and has grown on me over time, mainly headbanging grooves and crusty hardcore punk attacks that bordered on death metal without transgressing over. I find Fetid Zombie to be a reckless force of barbarian indifference, clearly don't give a fuck about you and what you think about what he does. Mark Riddick poured himself completely into every phase of his career. This cassette absolutely fuckin' slays! This whole record is basically psycho-addictive and I've become more hooked every day.A great level of individuated tracks: brutal death metal yes, this sound is different, headbangable riffage and a raw primal swagger that runs a gauntlet of styles and tones with ease -the residual after-effect equivalent to several tons of pure cocaine, a straight-up adrenaline shot and one of my favorite musical experiences. I know that maybe I hold a minority opinion on this. And that's cool with me, this the real underground. But I truly feel it can appeal to fans of everything from Heavy Metal to Autopsy and I cannot see how that is a bad thing. Narrow minded opinions and revisionist history don't appeal to me as much as the direct musical connection. And personally speaking, since discovering this project of Mark Riddick, I'll be listening to it pretty much non-stop and will forever do so. Sickeningly vicious, original and heavy as hell, "Grotesque Creation" tips the scale as a great and enduring metal record. The artwork is insane and the presentation of this tape is fkn old school. Killer job on this one Mark, cheers to that brother!

Suffering Mind-Messih Of extermination (LP/2015)

Suffering Mind is a Polish band that express the anti-social rage that had been building up inside of them. So if you think there are fast or extreme bands out there, you have another thing coming. Buckle your seatbelts, baby. This album is a brilliant combination of Terrorizer’s energy, early Napalm Death’s fantastic socially-aware lyrics, and the sheer brutality of Carcass. It displays the band’s wide array of talents; they do it all here. There’s awesome vocal effects, strategically placed samples, lyrics to throw at your capitalist friends and family, and each member of the band is in top form on their respective instrument.The drums about as fast as humanly possible, and does a nice, classy job during the slow sections as well, monster riffs and awesome fills. The guitar sounds very, very heavy, and incredibly crushing. You WILL bang your head, vocals are incredible, mostly shifting between three pitches: normal (unbelievably dark and gorilla-like), deep (which sounds like a grizzly bear barking at you indecipherably), and shrieking like a maniac, sounding absolutely demented. The production is superb for Grindcore. It’s crisp, it’s clear, you can hear every instrument, even the bass! Everything sounds great. All in all, I consider this album absolutely mandatory for Grindfreaks, or anyone curious about what is/was Grindcore, and why it’s a genre worth checking out. Believe me, when i was a kid i used to think Grind was pure noisy incompetence and horridness. Man, i was fkn wrong! Thank you, Suffering Mind, for showing me the light.

Winds Of Genocide-Usurping The Throne Of Disease (2015)

In 2015 bands worldwide give the world extreme music, known today as grindcore, crust punk, death metal, thrash,etc....a lot of bands still incorporating a lot of fast hardcore punk and they're doing it well! Winds Of Genocide grew out to became a household name in the metal scene. But, there are not really blast speed drums as we know it. Not with the snare on the first beat that is. This band blast speed still follows the classic beat rules. And personally, I quite like this approach. I makes the fastest parts still sound tighter than other grindcore bands these days. This album is, indeed, Raging Hell! There are not that much breakdowns or otherwise ‘quieter’ moments. Is the album monotone? For some it will be obviously, especially those not into old grindcore or death metal but for addicts, like myself, there is plenty of stuff happening to keep the songs apart. Catchy phrases, a cool break or hardcore punk beat here and there, incidental leads. The average grindcore/death/Crust punk fan will know what I’m talking about. Of course there are still a lot of hardcore punk moments on the album which make it sound like a natural progression. And obviously the backing gang-shout-vocals and incidental lead make this album sound more extreme than one would expect from a Death album. The subgenre was just discovering itself in these days so expecting some experimenting and more than just blast speed and grunts is advised to anyone still studying their metal history lessons.It’s pretty hard to come up with a final score for albums such as this. It would be easy to say “this album is enormously important so here’s 99 points”. I could do that. But in 2015, how does an album stand out? Compared to most modern day grind/death this album sounds extreme, brutal, refreshing and especially energetic. And fortunately Grindcore and Death Metal is a subgenre in which having a better production isn’t always a good thing. This album only gets better in every listen. Yes, grab a few beers and enjoy this madness. This album is killer!

The Pete Flesh Deathtrip-Mortui Vivos Docent (2013)

There is always a level of strangeness and eccentricity to any innovative band, project or album, but of all the releases i have for reviews, this is by far the strangest. What is heard on here could be summed up as a sort of warped celebration of the occult through the medium of a hybrid of death/doom and black metal with some heavy ambient overtones. There could be a level comparison to the later pre-ambient works of Burzum, Darthrone but the drastic contrast in vocal expression and melodic tendencies make that connection distant at best. One could see this as a transition work between the purer, death influenced black metal. It’s one of those albums that are often misunderstood simply because there is no real precedent to measure it against. The greatest charm of this creepy opus is its utter simplicity. Any concept of flash, flair, or technical showmanship is absent, making way for an entirely riff based formula that emphasizes a dark atmosphere and a vocally distorted series of free verse narrations, dense as hell vocal tracking.While not exactly the most accessible combination of elements, there is definitely a catchiness element to many of these songs, goes through several passages of blasting, muddy chaos, but the riffs that comes out when things calm down a little is heavily distinctive, containing a definite proto-Thrash vibe to it. Doom driven slower chapters as well. The album consistently maintains this death/black/doom dichotomy of chaotic, muddy passages switching up varying amounts of vocal oddities and production quirks with masterful precision. If you like to experience the rare sensation of getting high on an album, without the need of any chemical additives, “Mortui Vivos Docent” is about as close as you can get to the real thing. If you really want to creep yourself out, listen to it for the first time through a high end car stereo system while driving home at 3am the way I did. But in all seriousness, this is something that is utterly essential once you understand where it’s coming from. An acquired taste some may say, but those tastes tend to be the most treasured because they are shared with few people and earned through genuine effort. For followers of Bathory, Hellhammer and early Mayhem. I am not a die-hard fan of Black metal but definitely this is a cool album and it's worth every minute of it. Good job on this one Pete !!

Day Of Doom-The Gates Of Hell (2015)

I feel like this album sounds a bit like a cross between Deicide and Autopsy.For the most part it works quite well with their vicious guitar harmony. The riffs on this album at times attain monstrous proportions and there really isn’t a bad song here. Whatever the future of this band is, i'm looking forward to hear what they can do next, as a metalhead I’m ok with this album. The style take the band in a challenging direction while remaining true to the death metal roots.

Destroying Divinity-Hollow Dominion (2015)

Straightforward death metal. Features a conventional use of song structures and riffs especially technical but their punch and aggressiveness made everyone’s day. There is not one good reason to hate this if you are into death metal, that's for sure. It’s undeniable that they have a new level of complexity too, riffing is syncopated and attractive. All of this happens without compromising the evil and accelerated climate that governs their music, lower tones in guitars may not be a synonym of heaviness but it darkens enormously songs. Fast paced tremolo riffs. Production is polished, guitar distortion is not so raw but is still sharp and mindblowing. Bass guitar sounds louder, not as loud and crunchy as on the classic bands as Cannibal Corpse or Suffocation but it still adds some extra heaviness to the guitar riffs, which slay always.The last thing I want to point out is the drumming, a demolishing performance as well. Not bad at all !!

Deep In Hate-Chronicles Of Oblivion (2014)

What does it take to start out a band? Skill? Composition? Bad-assery? Probably. Now of course, the second track doesn't make up the whole album but that's not even where it stops. I kept getting hit with tasty melodies, solos, and riffs. The only thing I might have a slight issue with is with the coarse vocals and mid tempos, but this is a new band, so I'll cut them some slack. I can tell you this is a band that has an idea of what they're doing as far as melodic death goes, to go even as far as to say that they're a example of newer, more modern melodic death metal bands to come around with this album. I have high hopes for them in the future, i guess the only thing that might turn people away is the mid tempos, so I guess if that's not your style, avoid this album. They did definitely hit the right spot with the instruments and melody and Skill Musicianship, but that's about it for me !

Deaprtment Of Correction/Agathocles Split Ep (2014)

Here with have a split cd featuring Department Of Correction and Agathocles, Now it is time for both bands to share a record together, however that this cd only features short songs. Obviously we’re talking fast furious grindcore here with not much room left for breakdowns, D-beat parts or whatever, first band "Department Of Correction” is of course pure and brutal Grindcore, blastspeed all the way, emphasis is on short grinding songs, my favorite track" The Tank is in the Garden" erupts into pure musical violence. Agathocles only presents one track, but it’s fun hearing the band at their most heavy, doom death metal. In conclusion , this is furious. For collectors with an historical sense it is a must have. Department Of Correction and Agathocles on one EP. Enough said. Check this out !

DeadHorse-Loaded Gun (2014)

This goes back to the days when i discovered Dead Horse , now i'm glad i received this copy for review in 2015. Many times I found albums that turned out to be classic records, and all too many that we're very disappointing as well. This is a great surprise from hearing DeadHorse after so many years, somewhere between Thrash metal, speed metal and Hardcore Punk. DeadHorse pushed the aggression and originality a bit more in the early days . I guess the music here reflects their attitudes and their desire to rebel against the typical metal image. DeadHorse is something new and original. "Loaded Gun" does not try to surprise or trick the listener with flashy time changes or experimental songwriting. I don't want to make the band sound simplistic, but I believe the power of their music lies in their ability to get in and out of fast songs. DeadHorse has a straight forward style, and what they lacked in technical ability they more than made up for in energy. Songs like "Train Ride", the classic "World War Wathever" or "Forgive"and the title track thrash it out,  It has an unforgettable dual guitar riffs that leads into a heavy mid speed chugging that will make your neck sore by the end of each song. DeadHorse is back. Highly recommended!!!

Begrabnis/Estrangement (Split cd 2014)

This split cd features only one song of each band, and it's really hard for me to review only one tune, btw i can say there is definitely a "doomed" vibe present here, in as much as each succeeding cut burrows deeper into evocations of the destruction wrought by total war, and the inevitable and ensuing aftermath of hunger, desolation, and hopelessness. As for the tracks themselves, what you get here is with Begrabnis is a trebly, overdriven, and primitively produced ordinance dump of 16 rpm riffs, grunted vocals, delivered at the irnoic pace of a funeral procession. It's basically two riffs, repeated three times each, though it takes 9 minutes and 55 seconds to do so, a masterful evocation of chilling winter winds. It's dense.
Estrangement has an obvious and indisputable influence on all succeeding genres of "doom", especially "death/doom" and "funeral" doom. Here, we will find a trace of "poetic melancholy", complete with whispered narration,droning violins and brutal vocals. This is strictly metal in conception and execution, regardless of its novel properties. However you will certainly feel obliged to own this. Eternal frost, indeed !

Funeral Moth-Dense Fog (2014)

Funeral Doom Metal from Japan?? Yes. Everything works here: the hypnotic guitars, the seemingly tired drumming, the strange, somewhat muddy production (that seems to give it all a dark aura ), everything comes together to create a depressive mood. Unsurprisingly, the lyrics are in Japanese as well. Everything's hopeless here and the music makes sure to let you know about it. There's no room for other emotions, like anger, happiness or even that highly dramatic, screaming sorrow. The elements in their sound express a wider range of emotions and it makes you appreciate these little things a bit more. Their music is fkn intense, heavy and dark. Check it out !

Profetus-As All Seasons Die (2014)

One of the characteristic qualities of this album has to be its hypnotizing melodies. In fact, the main philosophy of this record is quality over the quantity. The songs do not have many riffs, yet music is not boring, but very dramatic, and emotional. Certainly, some people, the music may appear too repetitive, but it works in a magnificent way. The melodies are delicate dark masterpieces which stick in the listener head for days. The music has a tendency to put the listener in a trance like state mood using simple yet effective melodic foundations done using lead guitar melodies, and harsh misanthropic brutal vocals as the central instruments. The drumming, base, rhythm guitar and other effects provide groundwork for everything else, a certain wall of sound. Somewhat thin production give the additional bleak, and hollow atmosphere to the record makes the dark melodies, and growls even more effective. The story of the album is pretty depressive, but somehow it converts negative energy into a positive one, which was probably the main goal of the musicians. In conclusion "As All Seasons Die" is a good album in the metal underground. It seems to have a melodic doom death metal tag, but in my view the term may be contingent since many groups mix things up. I would just call it funeral doom metal from Finland. If you haven’t heard it, it is a must have for any metal head, Profetus write a honest emotional music with feelings.

Basilisk-End Of Catastrophe (2013)

Well, I can't say that there's much black metal on here, but this is fucking true death metal, starts off with a big kick to your face with a furious blast, before going to a half time grind. Damn! That's catchy! Like every song on here, pummelling riffs and nasty drumming coming in at you from all angles. The drumming on this Japanese band just sounds malevolent, as if the drummer wants to punch you in the face with each beat, excellent riffs, rawer sound. The drums on here, especially, don't sound triggered. Hell, even the guitars have a ripping sound with a minimum of special effects. This gives the album a very badass sound. Very death metal, and very underground. Interesting band singing in Japanese, and this is Death metal to the bone.

Faithxtractor-Razing The World Of Mith/Project Trauma (2014)

This is a compilation of early Demos from 2006-2007. The vocals are double-tracked and are often deep, decayed growls that sound as if they are coming from the grave. Every once in awhile vocalist will unleash a blood curdling shriek or do something else unexpected which further adds to the horror of the music. The production on this compilation album is incredible. It is thick and dirty sounding, yet clean enough to hear everything that is happening on the album. Sick, twisted, and absolutely fucked up. Faithxtractor blends death metal and grindcore beautifully into one of the sickest sounds ever. The riffs are groove-laden and catchy. The bass rumbles along underneath the riffs providing more earth shaking tremors. The drums are possibly the best musical attribute on the album. They are some of the most interesting patterns in extreme metal, technically very impressive. They are constantly present and blend with the music extremely well.This is a great, somewhat obscure album. Killer !!

FaithXtractor-The Great Shadow Infiltrator (2013)

Let me start this review by saying that when it comes to death metal I am all about the old school. I've always preferred the older and dirtier death metal to the more modern over produced technical guitar masturbation that is called death metal now. Don't get me wrong I like some of the newer stuff and appreciate the talent it takes to write and play in these bands, but its not the same and most of it is not for me. Sometimes change is good, sometimes its for the better but not always. In the case of Faithxtractor I'm glad they retained that signature of the old school sound, to me the lyrics are dark, humourous and nothing more, it brings a certain sense of fun to death metal that I think is missing these days. The genre takes itself too serious at times and it takes a band like Faithxtractor to inject some B-movie horror lyrics and silliness into the equation.The musicianship on this album is impressive, very good guitar solos. Its blended together in a way that tells a story rather than just another song about gore and murder.This album is a must have for Death Metal fans, its fun, silly, gory, sludgy, aggressive and raw. They're bringing back a part of death metal thats been missing for a long time. Its worth your time if you're into the old school sound so go buy it now.

Three Sixes-Know God, No Peace...(2014)

Three Sixes is a controversial metal band, and that it may very well change metal, this band is creative and brilliant, many could attack this album as simply only having various songs that all feature almost the exact same riffs each time. And though that's true ,what they are able to create with one single riff is amazing. Their style of making music is creative, each instrumentalist playing something in a different time signature. This sort of experimentation truly pays off in the long run, as it leaves listeners scratching their heads and wondering just exactly what they heard featuring odd time signatures, aggressive drumming and guitar playing, and the signature brutal vocals from Damien grabbing the listener the moment they hit the play button. The band also experimented with slower ambient pieces, and these help to transition the listener from part to part, giving them a much needed break from the familiar riff that dominates the main theme of the song. Three Sixes is not for everyone. But if one has the patience and open-mindedness to listen to this band, then this album is clearly the place to start. It's the first album of theirs I listened to, and at first I truly did not know what to think. But after relistening to it a few times, I saw the genius in their work. Is it flawed? Of course, everything ever made is flawed (here, in particular, the repetition can get a bit tedious). But is it still a fantastic experience from start to finish? Also includes an interesting cover of Ac/Dc. Yes. And it's worth every second.

Signs Of The Evil-Crucificcion De La Peste Cristiana (2014)

This original demo was recorded back in 2007. This is where it all begun with Signs Of The Evil. That 30% or so of black metal bands who play this style that sounds like nothing but chaos to the inexperienced and at its best represents the dizzying heights that black metal can be taken to. Influenced by Beherit, Proclamation, Conqueror....and a few touches of Blasphemy as well. Combining the speed of grindcore, the hardness and grit of the evil of early black metal (such as Mayhem – Deathcrush), there is also a bit of a more typical black metal rasp to them. The lyrics are the best kind of black metal lyrics, songs about war, genocide, and satanic rites, you’ll see the all-pervading influence of the mighty, the one and only Blasphemy on this one. If you like Anti-Christian lyrics, check this Peruvian Black Metal band.

Azotador-Insertando La Sustancia (2014)

The style of this Bolivian Band is pure thrash metal like only in the 80's bands were able to do. So here we mosh, headbang and jump. The rhythmic guitars are always quite technical in their fast riffs. The drums are on up tempo and the opener shows great tempo changes with fast, tapped solos, we can find true technical parts in this kind of thrash metal, especially in the guitar galloping riffage and the solos. Azotador reminds me bands like Heathen and Vio-Lence, for guitars virtuosos. The vocals beside are not excessive but thrash anyway. The fast bass drums moments are great; the guitar sound is extremely crunchy, a bunch of thrash riffage. Total impact. When you think that a song could be a bit more melodic or slower  here the thrash riffs suddenly return and the melody is erased, fast and technical Total thrash to headbang. All in all, this is a quite good effort, worth getting for the sound quality and the riffs, if you enjoy this genre, get it!
