Eraser - Mutual Overkill Deterrence (2020)


From start to finish, these Italians waste no time in delivering 20 or so minutes of absolutely blistering and explosive deathgrind. Every last song here is loaded with furious and fiery performances all around. The growls and grunts here are heavy as hell, delivering very powerful and rapid-fire performance. The riffs here are an even mixture of death metal, hardcore punk and grindcore, consisting of numerous long stretches of blast beats and double bass as well as simpler, slower beats spiced up with many fills. The band frequently mix it up in a song to produce something multi-faceted that keeps the listener on their toes and interested, with songs consisting of fast, blasting grind-inspired sections. The music here never fails to deliver great riffs and interesting, propulsive drumming. Everything is so tightly and convincingly performed it manages to be fresh and interesting throughout - the album never fails to deliver intense and inspired performances as well as track after track of supremely heavy deathgrind. The production is punchy and clear, with the sound accentuating the guitars and drums nicely and giving them the impact they need. Full blasting from the beggining to the end and killing everything on it's way. Only hatred and fury exales from this album, not for the faint of heart. Eraser is the new meaning of brutality!!

Black Knife/Ritual Moon 7" Split


The Underground scene is getting stronger right now, with bands such as Ritual Moon and Black knife, focusing more on the blacker, more evil style of the Thrash genre. I can mention influences such as early Bathory and Hellhammer, but also have that bite of hardcore and speed metal in there. Black knife has the first side of the 3-song split, providing us with two songs: "Chaos Reigns" and "Take The Devils hand". These songs are fast, furious onslaughts of thrash, focusing more on speed and aggression rather than long and technical guitar solos. Because of this, it is clear that they enjoy doing this. While thrash metal often feature technical, lengthy guitar solos, Black Knife don't use that many. If you want a technical thrashfest, don't come here. If you want a blackened evil Thrash Metal, this is right up your alley. Is that bad? Hell No. Is that good? Fuck yes. It rips! Ritual Moon completes the split with one song of their own "Mad Lust".This is dark and evil as Black Knife. It sounds like a mixture of black thrash and hardcore. It doesnt let up. This tune is a heavy metal blitzkrieg that reminds the listener of what a true Brutal thrash band sounds like. This is metal ferocity. You might sense that Im getting a bit excited about this Split, but its worth getting excited about. This Split is fkn solid !!

Haunted Cenotaph - Abyssal Menace (2020)


Here, we see Haunted Cenotaph at their most primitive... and in the end; we have quite a beast of an album.This is very much a straight-up, death/doom affair here. The songs stay down tempo and rarely go beyond that. You've got sort of slow with brutal riffs. While the music here isn't flashy or technical, the song structures are well thought out, and very effective at generating a lush, dark & somber atmosphere. The guitar tone here packs a lot of punch, and the riffs are heavy as all fuck. They pummel its listener with slow, monstrous blows until every bone in their body is crushed. On a couple of occasions, they will break into acoustic passages, in which they do a fantastic job of creating a beautiful, haunting atmosphere. This sets it up for the heavy parts to hit even harder and feel much more aggressive. The drumming while not doing anything over top, it still does a great job at maintaining a powerful, precise rhythm throughout the entire album. Gut wrenching vocal performance, yet vocalist performance is still brutal as hell, and he does a pretty good job of pronouncing the lyrics so they can be somewhat easily understood. I highly recommend this for any fans of death/doom, as well as anyone who doesn't really know much about the genre and wants to see what it has to offer.

Blood Curse - Sorceress (2018)


Blood Curse have that sound which harks back to a different era, that era is the New Wave of British Heavy Metal (NWOBHM) which swept over the United Kingdom during the late 70’s and early 80’s and if you didn’t know any better, you can say that Blood Curse stood alongside the likes of Iron Maiden or Angel Witch in 1980. But you’ll be surprised to learn that Night Demon actually formed in Kentucky a few years ago by Aaron Franks: Vocals/Guitar/Bass and Olivia Franks: Drums/Bass releasing their debut album 'Sorceress' in 2018. You can hear the influences of Diamond Head but Blood Curse spread out in the NWOBHM territory with plenty of the songs pointing towards the early Iron Maiden too. For the trained Maiden fan, there are little homages dotted throughout and this makes 'Sorceress' much more fun as you play the game of: “oh yeah, that’s from that song etc”. If you’re starting to think that maybe 'Sorceress' isn’t for you, then there are other nods to other bands as Judas Priest for example. 'Sorceress' is an excellent slice of NWOBHM and what you have to remember is, it is a homage, a nod to a band who knows where they come from, taking everything in their stride and creating their own sound. Blood Curse have created an album that is an absolute joy to listen to, not only are the tracks fun and full of the riffs and melodic breaks which make you crack out the air guitar, but each song is well crafted. This album is not only essential for all metalheads….it should be required listening!

Pantheon - Age of Wolves (2020)


Pantheon is a Death Metal band keeping the thrashing nastiness of the early 90's sound, this album unleashes aggression, solid guitars sound, which is down-tuned to the levels of latter day Slayer, and with chunky speed riffs to boot. Along for the ride is the usual barrage of impressive lead guitar gymnastics, but presented in a way that is not quite as overtly neo-classical, but more of a merging of the wild shredding of Cannibal Corpse . These are the sort of songs that most fans of older death metal can probably get into, even with all the lighter melodic lead passages that remind more of 1991 than 2020. The catchy "Age Of Wolves" showcase an intricate merging of heavier mid-paced poundage with the older, fast paced death/thrash character. This is a pretty solid contender amongst all the extreme releases from 2020 in the underground scene. Vocally it's a lot closer to a number of Florida outfits from back in the day, and thus comes an interesting blend of old and new that usually makes transitional albums all the more interesting. "Age Of Wolves" is an album with strong fresh appeal, and even the die-hard late 80s early 90's death metal cultists should give this album a listen. It's more of an extreme metal album, so give it a shot!!

Cathartic - Ceremonial Resurrection (EP 2020)


The music here is straightforward Death Metal when it comes to the drums and riffs. The vocals are brutal, i can tell they're influenced by the swedish style as well, although the music here is faster and brutal. My favorite aspect of this EP is the thunderous, yet melodic guitar shreds in Slowly Rotting, and the fast growling adds more texture to the sound; it has some of the New York’s chaotic style too, i can mention early Incantation that one should not underestimate. And then you have a more traditional song like Retribution. Of course, there’s room for improvement but this EP from these Mexican maniacs is certainly destructive, raw, and chaotic, they accomplished that without issues. A solid EP of fucking death metal. It's not the polished shit you'll hear nowadays; there's no ultra tight and technical, but it's uncontrolled chaos with furious blasting. It's nice to hear the variations between fast riffing and the slow grooving death metal, haunting and evil. The low end guitar tone and overall sound of this EP fills your lungs with dirt and shit and you feel like you're being dragged into the bowels of hell!!

Evil - Possessed by Evil (2021)

 This violent Assault from these japanese maniacs mixes perfectly the old school raw thrash metal to the bone.The songs are generally quite short and they point directly to the core of extremism. There’s no melody or will to slow down. We can also find some more canonical examples of speed/thrash metal too in a song like “Yaksa” but the up tempo parts are just blowing for power and intensity. The sounds are quite clear but extremely essential and you can hear the old style production very well. Nothing has been pumped in the studio and the volumes are simply those by the instruments. The band itself has inside an insane load of anger and madness. The tunes sound extremely heavy and twisted especially for the schizophrenic vocals that sometimes reach such a high level of morbidity, especially for the sick screams. Obviously, in an album like this, you must completely forget about technique and precision. There are several imprecise parts but everything is a simple demonstration of anger and impact. The power of the rhythmic guitars is unbelievable and during the palm muting riffage, it’s like being overwhelmed by truck at full speed. You can hear the early Sepultura and Destruction influences, the morbid atmosphere and the sounds are similar, speed and pure anger. This album is intense and violent. True old school thrashers, beware the impact of EVIL!

The Slime - Coming soon to an Alley Near You (2020)

Emerging from Toronto, The Slime releases their Ep 'Coming Soon to an Alley Near You'. Heavy in its presence and mosh-inducing, this Ep constantly pounds your eardrums with double-bass beats and angry vocals. Combining the aggression of Agnostic Front with the speed of Bad Brains creates a cool sound of extreme Hardcore. However, it has some metallic elements such as double-bass drumming and heavy guitars, Thi Ep quickly grabs the listener's attention. Vocal is aggressive and strong, cause the auditor to want to chant along and become part of this monster that is The Slime. The opening track, "Coming Soon to an Alley Near You" immediately calls you to action; this is a good opener because it showcases the ability of the band completely - the ultimate speed, violent lyrics and occasional vocal melodies let you know what's up. Kick ass HardCore with a touch of Metal !!

Ritual Moon


The first full lenght album by Ritual Moon completely fufilled my expectations. Very aggressive and fast, but still the same raw  ritual Moon at its core. I am also glad to hear better production and more varied drum work on this release, not that there was anything wrong with these things on the previous stuff, but it gives it a much better and brutal sound. As mentioned before, the production on this album is also a big step up from the previous material. It has much more bass added and creates some great shit for this album. The guitar sounds fucking killer, the drummer rips, and vocals sound full of hatred. This is definitely a new savage sound while still retaining most of what made Ritual Moon what it is. One thing that I know improved is the drumming. Drumming on this album is really solid and can easily match the speed of the riffs and adds some nice fills. The guitar work is insane. They can be brutal and heavy but at the same time, they're also quite catchy so the riffs strike a balance between heavy and melodic. Ritual Moon doesnt let up. Track after track is a brutal metal blitzkrieg that reminds the listener of what a true extreme metal record sounds like. Tracks like 'Grave Soul' 'Uncontrollable Death' and 'Crimson Avenger' are easily examples of their ability to take early black metal to new heights of Thrash Metal ferocity. You might sense that Im getting a bit excited about this record, but its a record worth getting excited about if you like the raw sound of Thrash Metal. If you enjoy their previous material, I have no doubt that you will enjoy this. Pick this up and have your mind changed by a face-melting nuclear blast!!!

Headless Eyes - Horripilations (2020)


This is a cool project by the name of 'Headless Eyes'.
Billy Nocera from Razorback Records has based an entire album on the great era of horror, the 70's and 80's in my opinion or at least this album is inspired by it. The music here is something to be appreciated. It has a very thrashy sound which reminds me a little 'Eaten Back to Life' was 'Cannibal Corpse' in some parts. The music is catchy as hell and is what you would come to expect if you enjoy bands like I do. The vocal style i found it refreshing to actually base the songs on something that we all might relate to. I enjoy the production as it is dark which helps to give the music texture and a scary aura that is perfect for the likes of 80's influenced style. I hope that every listener has had the enjoyment that I have had while listening to ' Horripilations' and appreciates it for its musical attributes and dedication from its creator. The world of Razorback is back with vengeance upon the metal world strong and vibrant. To sum up this album ... BUY IT! It is well worth your money. The songs rock, the music rules and even the lyrics rule! If you want a good listen, this is the right place to find it. I highly recommend this album. I don't what else I can tell you to convince you that you should get this album, just get it. Definitely a big surprise to me. Great job on this one Billy !! Laceratory - Extermination Of The Dissidents (2020)

 

Laceratory are quite frankly sick as fuck! Started in 2018 they were social distancing before it was mandated, with the band starting in Minneapolis and members all over the globe. Laceratory are a killer, brutal , death metal band that not only kicks you in the dick with sheer brutality, but the technical proficiency is on display as well. This album has that perfect combination of tuned down death metal nastiness and guttural vocals to please even the most discerning slam fan! Alternating between painfully slow chugging guitars and brain pummeling blast beats there are snippets of some serious technical skill that keeps this album from being just another brutal/ slam album. Laced with gore filled lyrics written with the blood off a butcher knife that was just used to slice a throat, I highly recommend giving Extermination of the Dissidents a listen to get your needed dose of gore, and brutality!

Cadaver Putrefacto - La Maldicion del Zombi Errante (2017)

 

Having been in existence off and on since 2000, Argentina’s  Cadaver Putrefacto is made up of veterans of the Argentine death metal  scene. La Maldicion del Zombi Errante sound like something that could easily have come out of the Buffalo scene in the early 90’s, if not for the songs all being sung in Spanish. That’s not to say that the band or this album sound dated, but on the contrary it still sounds fresh and the band deliver a brutally refreshing album that is amazingly listenable no matter what language the lyrics are in. It’s a refreshing deaprture from the technical trend that death metal has taken in recent years. The overall sound is killer and while not being technical it’s not simplistic either. The perfect blend of brutality, gore, and just enough technicality to keep it from being boring. Look these guys up on Bandcamp and give your ears the abuse they deserve!

Aphotica - The Arrival (2019)

 

My initial impression on this album was that I was about to listen to an album full of Amon Amarth cover tunes, but I’m glad I was wrong. To say I was pleasantly surprised as the album progressed would be an understatement. The album definitely starts off on an Amon Amrarth’ish  but rapidly progresses into so much more. Elements of both symphonic black metal and old school black metal shine through as the album winds it way through the Edda’s and Saga’s of ancient Nordic belief. There’s not a lot to dislike about this band to be honest, and the skill shown on this sophomore release is killer with some beautiful female backing vocals to compliment the black metal vocals,  and I look forward to hearing what is coming next. If you’re a fan of any of the Pagan metal bands or even just black metal I would recommend you grab your sword, slaughter a sacrifice  to Odin, grab a horn of mead, and jam the fuck out of The Arrival.

Funeral Bastard - Grave Cult Ascension ( Cassette 2018)


Nonstop catchy as hell riffing and Lemmy/Cronos-inspired thundering bass lines play the soundtrack to some form of dystopian nightmare full of booze, leather, spikes, Lucifer, and bar room brawls. I just got this release from 2018, holy hell, this is aggressive. Funeral Bastard basically sounds like an amalgamation of the fastest bits of Motörhead mixed with Venom's vitriol and the primitive, chest thumping of Hellhammer; all played to the tune of raging, speeding, punked-up heavy metal. Grave Cult Ascension offers nine tracks of pure savagery. The riffs are high energy, speeding heavy metal with a dash of punkened simplicity, sticking to the basics, which fits the band's style quite well. While the riffs are utterly fantastic, one of the highlights has to be the gravelly barked growls with pure filth and destruction. It would seem that Funeral Bastard is on fire at this point: when it comes to raging, speeding, filthy metal, this band are the ones. I hope to see these guys in concert soon. Play it Loud Damn It !!

Psychomancer - Shards Of The Hourglass (2019)


This is a mix between death and thrash metal, most of the riffs and leads are played more in a thrash manner while the drumming, vocals, and solos are going in the death metal style. In essence you could call this album an extreme thrash sound, with a technical edge. First off the songs themselves are mainly played at very high tempos and the solos are almost entirely played in a brutal style which is fast guitar picked distorted soloing that lasts for a short time. Swedish sound seems to be a big influence on Psychomancer’s style which uses a lot of swedish guitar tones techniques. Fortunately most of the songs are very entertaining and filler is almost non existent. Even when these guys slows down to more mid tempo the songs are still very entertaining. The band’s playing is very tight which shows they are highly capable musicians who exhibit incredible skill since most of their songs are played at very high and brutal tempos. The vocals are awesome. The guitar work has a technical aspect to it. The drumming is nearly flawless and is very double kick bass driven with some absolutely pummeling rhythms. The bass guitar is there too. Shards Of The Hourglass is an instant classic that belongs in any thrash or death metal collector’s collection. The best songs for me are Hell's Venom and Red Poetry (which contains a kick ass intense vocals). I recommend this great album to any extreme metal fan who likes technically challenging death/thrash.

Fetid Zombie - Death Covenant (2019)


Another sick release by Mark Riddick Project "Fetid Zombie". The violence here expressed by these musicians is an example for the generations to come. Everything here is so obscure, sick and brutal, starting from the bestial, animalistic vocals. The production is perfect for the rotten atmosphere. The beginning is the best with songs like “Swarm Of Filth” and “Necromanced From the Grave”: the up tempo parts and the mid paced, already morbid as fuck, breaks are perfectly balanced with killer solos and catchy lines. The screams in have something of inhuman while the violent drums parts tear my limbs apart, pure sickness. Great death metal songs with the up tempo sections are incredible for malevolence. What else can i say about this release? It's a massive death metal brutality.This is pure DEATH METAL. Period. Highly recommended for old school metal fans, and thrashers as well. A fundamental piece of extreme music. Relentless!

Unburied - From beyond The Grave (2020)


The doom elements are already in place in some seriously good riffing on this release. As the sound quality became a little louder, the instruments began to raise themselves out of the shallow graves. The guitar sound have a thicker projection and in turn give the songs more of a "crunch" to its rabid bite. A slower and more doom-like sound mixed with raw death metal. The growled voice still there, the drumming chops begin to expand by attempting to match some of the different tempo changes and as a result there's more capability to include varied fills to the overall mixture. Matt fleshed out dormant abilities of himself from his last recording. And I have to say within less than a year's time he gave a decent size "nudge" forward. I recommend this recording for followers of a mixture of death, thrash and hints of doom where each of the respected genres are capable of working together as a whole.  I actually really like the filthy, atmosphere on this album.

Unburied - Primitive, Raw, Underground (2019)


The riffs on this release have a driving maniacal feeling to them and are played with insane rawness. I'm not bashing the common style of playing it's just that this is sort of a shock when compared to other extreme forms of music . These songs are punishing, vocals are interesting  as he grimly pukes out lyrical contents of this album . A demented personality of the characters portrayed on this. A cold decaying feeling of murder and morbidity. The drums punishing the listener with all out assault on the senses . Even the slower breaks from the insane pace of the songs are well done and have a morbid sound. Whether it's the sick-in-the-head escaped mental patient feeling given off by the vocals, or the morbid guitar is what the underground scene is all about. A perfect mixture of mental morbidity and raw brutality by Matt Pike. YOU NEED TO OWN THIS PERIOD !!!!!!!

Hellion - Rebel's Curse (2019)

It's a heavy explosion that will simply destroy you. It's relentlessly unstoppable, utterly dirty, and completely endless. This is Hellion from Colombia. This is an insanity of an album! Also a personal note, this stuff kicks a whole lot of ass.  Who cares how sloppy this can get at times, this is metal! The production could probably be noted as a bit thin and has an emphasis on the guitars over everything else, but in Hellion's case here such a mix is appropriate. Totally killer. It's pure raw thrash Metal never giving you room for a short breath in sight. You could say this is pretty comparable to what Whiplash did with Power And Pain, the entire point of this album is just to simply kick your ass repeatedly song after song. Rebel's Curse easily accomplishes this challenge if you're craving for a dose of nonstop brutal thrash. I'll simply end this review with this: if you want relentless violent music with an aggressive rough vocals, with crazy razor sharp fast guitars, and don't mind simplicity, get this Cd immediately. Also do yourself a favor and check out the bands other releases.  If you like your music fast fast fast - get your fix of Rebel's Curse NOW!

Amorphia - Arms To Death (2018)

Thrash metal is finally starting to emerge from different metal scenes worldwide where it was forged during the previous years. Amorphia from India already shocked me with this absolutely masterful “Arms To Death”  (an ultra-raw, lethal dose of thrash with some classic german sound references and, at the same time, a look toward the future) this is terrific and apocalyptic thrash metal. Rude, raw, primitive and flawless. Every riff flows into the next one in a totally flawless manner, beating the listener’s head at full up-tempo speed with some remarkable crescendos of power.  Nearly every song is built around an ascending climax which reaches its apex in the chorus, always conveying a quite threatening and mean feeling. The most brilliant example of this attack must be “Toxic Death”: aggressive, menacing riffs is furiously unleashed, developing into a really tasty sequence of wicked melodies which explodes into the devastating chorus. This Cd contains a lot of brutality and it's barbaric !!

Metralion - Quo vadis/A Mosh In Brazil (2019)


After three decades of silence, Awakening Records proudly presents a compilation of METRALION's two aggressive thrash metal gems "Quo Vadis" (1988) and "A Mosh in Brazil" (1989). In the late 80's the Brazilian Metal scene was simply the best in Southamerica. There were a fierce competition. Bands like Sepultura, Vulcano, Mx, Chakal and Sarcofago at the time were intense, but polishing their sound in every album. When Sepultura shook the world with “Beneath the Remains” not many were left floating around obviously. I'm glad that awakening records release these superb gems in one Cd.  The classic Metralion show here how raw thrash metal with full force should be played. it's simply amazing.  For fans of DORSAL ATLÂNTICA, TAURUS, MX, and ATTOMICA !!

Nightbound - Ep (2019)


This is actually my first exposure to Nightbound from Paraguay. It seems I should have paid a bit closer attention to this band early on it. The production is very full and heavy in all the right spots, which, as a child of the 80's, i really like it.  The true power of Heavy could be heard with all of the ferocity that it's supposed to be heard. I do enjoy the sound captured here; the bass is mixed nicely in the songs, the guitars are crisp without overstating their presence, and the vocals are really good and melodic. A winner there, for sure. Arianna’s vocals are pretty awesome and they definitely have an old school vibe to them, it works quite well. This Ep sets to create a barrage of melodic/heavy tunes and just plain awesome. While there is certainly room for improvement, this band accomplishes that goal with stunning ease and is a fantastic start for a very talented and awesome band.

Anthropic - Architects Of Aggression (2020)

So if you think there's bands fast or extreme, you have another thing coming. Buckle your seatbelts. This is a brilliant combination of brutality. It displays the band’s wide array of talents; they do it all here. Each member of the band is in top form on their respective instrument. Jim hits the drums about as fast as humanly possible, the bass player attack without mercy. very solid guitar, with monster riffs and awesome fills. The guitar sounds very, very heavy, and incredibly crushing. You WILL bang your head. Vocals are incredible, unbelievably dark, deep, which sounds like a grizzly bear barking at you indecipherably. Too much emotion, sounding absolutely demented. Unbelievable!! He captures all your anger and frustration and turns it into sonic bliss. The production is superb for Grindcore. It’s crisp, it’s clear, you can hear every instrument. Everything sounds great. You can immediately distinguish each instrument and what they’re trying to do. It’s beautiful. It’s definitely ONE OF the best Grindcore albums I’ve heard in a while. All in all, I consider this album absolutely mandatory for Grindfreaks, or anyone curious about what is/was Grindcore, and why it’s a genre worth checking out. Cruel Bomb - Trinity Terror (2020-EP)

When it comes to thrash revival, there have been a lot of amazing new bands that have developed and are playing some really solid old school 80's style thrash, chaotic, spastic, and very punky. So when the occasional new thrash band adds a bit of that groove influence or more of a modern style to the mix, they almost automatically stand out from the pack. This is what makes Cruel Bomb. pop very clearly from the rest of the movement. What makes this new Ep interesting is the combination of chunky riffs and brutal drum patterns with chaotic and thrashy elements, in other words it's a fkn lethal combination. This Ep balances with some very headbangable thrash parts. The impressive production (and very impressive mix and mastering) help bring out both sides of the band. The bass is a prominent feature to their sound and style which is amazing, kick ass riffs, angry vocals and the stellar drumming is flawless. Cruel Bomb is among my favorite new bands from this new thrash movement, and definitely one of the best. The songs are well written and performed in a vicious way.  Young, aggressive and original. They put Thrash metal in the right position of being the heaviest sound on the block, it could sit there forever. Songs to check out: All of them but definitely Atomic Demolition Munition is my favorite. This Ep will crush your fucking skull and Posers will die !!!
